CHOOSING HEALTH WHITE PAPER 2004

Choosing Health considers how the Government has set out to inform and encourage the public as well as shape the commercial and cultural environment so that it is easier for individuals to choose a healthy lifestyle.  It concerns itself with being a ‘down to earth and practical approach to public health policies’.

MENTAL HEALTH and EMPLOYMENT - DWP RESEARCH REPORT No. 513 2008

This report presents findings of a qualitative research project to investigate the relationship between mental health and employment. It was commissioned to address a gap in knowledge about the circumstances leading people with mental health conditions to claim incapacity benefits as well as exploring employers’ understanding and experience of dealing with mental health in the workplace.

MENTAL HEALTH and WORK – A REPORT FOR THE NATIONAL DIRECTOR for WORK and HEALTH, MARCH 2008

In response to a request by the Secretary of State for Health and the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Dame Carole Black led this review of the health related factors that influence working life in Britain before making recommendations based on her findings.  As suggested in the title it details issues relating to mental health such as stigma in the employment process and sickness absence.

NO ONE WRITTEN OFF: REFORMING WELFARE TO REWARDS RESPONSIBILITY, PUBLIC HEALTH CONSULTATION JULY 2008

This Green Paper sets out plans for improving support and work incentives to create a system that rewards responsibility.  The Consultation Paper continues the overhaul of the welfare system with the objective of maximising the number of people in employment and minimising the number of those receiving benefits.

High Quality Care for All - NHS Next Stage Review Final Report, June 2008

Lord Darzi’s report sets out a new foundation for the health service that empowers staff and gives patients choice.  It details the need to drive improvements in the quality of care and build upon the success of the NHS.

Working for a Healthier Tomorrow, Dame Carol Black Report 2008

This review aims to address the human, social and economic costs of impaired health and well being in relation to working life in Britain.  It doesn’t offer a solution but instead identifies the barriers to good health and interventions such as changes in attitudes and behaviours.

The End of Life Care Strategy is a publication by the Government that addresses issues relating to care provision for adults with advanced progressive illness in England. It seeks to provide people approaching the end of life with more choice about where they would like to live and die.

Health Inequalities: Progress and Next Steps, June 2008

This document outlines the Government’s approach to hit the 2010 health inequalities Public Service Agreement targets, assessing what has and has not worked, and setting the direction of travel beyond 2010.  It achieves this by considering current health inequalities and potential interventions to reduce and eliminate these inequalities.

This is the West Midlands Health and Well-being Strategy that will drive and influence delivery of health improvements across the West Midlands by linking with other regional strategies, such as the West Midlands Regional Spatial Strategy and the West Midlands Economic Strategy. Mental Health at Work: Developing the Business Case policy paper 8, The Sainsbury Centre for Mental Health

This paper discusses the importance to employers of mental health problems in the workforce, it draws on UK and international evidence to identify key effects of mental ill health and stress at work.  It also seeks to quantify these in financial terms.
